Description

Khajuraho, a small town located in the Bundelkhand region of Madhya Pradesh, is a classic example of Indian architecture and its culture in medieval times. The erotic sculptures of Khajuraho depicting Kamasutra are unique in the world. Built between 950-1050 CE by the Chandel dynasty, the Khajuraho temple is one of the most important samples of Indian art. These sets of Hindu and Jain temples took about a hundred years to take shape. Originally a collection of 85 temples has come down to number 25. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Temple Complex is divided into three areas: Western, Eastern and Southern. Most of the temples in the western group are, there are carved Jain temples in the east, while in the southern group there are only a few temples. Jain temples were built for Jainism flourishing in the region during the Chandela regime in the temples of the Eastern group. The western and southern part of the temple is dedicated to various Hindu deities. Eight of these temples are devoted to Vishnu, six to Shiva, and one Ganesh and Surya to three Jain Tirthankars.
